Crossing the river in an empty boat*

This post starts the commentary on living a human life. It needs be my commentary, whether the words are original or quoted, on the arising of living that is my life. What each of us has is our own experience, all fundamentally social and at the same time unique. It purports not to be the truth. Commentaries never are; they are in the nature of opinions. They may be accepted or rejected as more or less grounded or connected to your experience. They are not the truth. (As an aside, beware of claims to the truth for they are claims to obedience. More on this at another time.)

Let’s begin with what we could as well end with…

When everything is given,
Nothing is required and
Gratitude alone remains.

*With apologies to Chuang Tzu and Thomas Merton
